The Making of a Jedi

Today I decided to give ballpoint pens a try. First, I sketched out a rough pencil drawing of my favorite Star Wars character, Yoda. Slowly and gently layers of color were scribbled upon each other to make texture, shadows and darker tones.

Sketch of Yoda

I had a lot of fun working on this but it took quite a bit of patience to fill in the larger areas. Overall, this took me about 15 hours to complete.

The Great Santa Debate

Am I really the only one who was traumatized as a kid when I learned the cold, hard truth about Santa? Honestly, I was devastated. I couldn’t believe I had been so gullible and that my family, friends and teachers all conspired against me. As a result, I never carried forth the Santa tradition with my son. When I tell people this I’m often met with wide eyes and gasps of horror. They say, “how could you rob your child of the Christmas magic?”

Here are four reasons why I believe the TRUTH is so much more magical than Mr. Claus.

Wearing Your Earth Suit Well

Growing up, I loved watching shows about adventures into outer space. In fact, I took my first baby steps in front of my parent’s black and white TV, while we watched Neil Armstrong take his first steps onto the surface of the moon in 1969. How cool is that?

astronautNeil Armstrong must have been incredibly brave to travel to the moon in a shooting rocket. But despite his courage, he was still required to wear a special helmet and gear for survival. His space suit was a complex outer garment designed to keep him alive, safe and mobile for work outside normal earthly accommodations. As you can imagine, proper maintenance and care of his space suit was necessary to successfully complete the mission.

As humans we have been given special suits as well, which help us accomplish our purpose on planet earth. Similar to an astronaut’s spacesuit, our bodies are a complex system designed specifically for the kind of work we are called to do. However, there are all kinds of problems we can run into with our earth suits. For example, disease and disabilities…plus the fact they’re very susceptible to sin and temptation. That’s why we must take extra precautions to care for them properly.

My Close Encounter of the Bizarre Kind

When I was about seven years old, I went outside one day to climb my favorite tree. I looked forward to hiding in the branches behind the camouflage of leaves, where I always found true peace. However, when I got there I noticed something, or someone, very peculiar standing beside the tree. And whoever it was, they were watching me. It made me very apprehensive because I had never seen anything, or anyone, like it before.

The bizarre non-human being was as tall as I was, with a bright blue body and skinny legs.  It had large creepy eyes that looked like they were outlined with bright yellow war paint.  It wore a thick colorful robe that trailed on the ground for several feet behind it, much like a king would wear. However, instead of being lined with diamonds and jewels, it was embedded with dozens of round eyes that carefully watched my every move. It scared me terribly, but it also sparked an intense curiosity that prevented me from running away, and somehow compelled me to walk closer…slowly.

Laughter really is the best medicine and it doesn’t even have any bad side effects…unless, of course, you have an annoying snort when you chuckle that forces milk out of your nostrils while you’re trying to enjoy a good meal with friends.

The Truth About Prince Charming

Once upon a time, I truly believed I had found my prince charming, only to find out later that he was just wearing a disguise. As I was pondering how hard it is for me to understand men, this cartoon idea came to mind.

Flexing My Right Brain

Growing up I spent a lot of time drawing and painting. I dreamed of being a cartoonist one day. However, I was hired right out of art school to do web design and I’ve been on the computer ever since (over 20 years now). And while I enjoy that type of work too, I have really missed the feeling of a pencil in my fingers and the ability to let my mind wander on creating something whimsical. So, I got out some paper last night and decided to get my right brain in gear again.

First, I searched for a photo I could use for inspiration and I found this:

oak tree

As soon as I saw this tree I wanted to climb it…or even LIVE in it. Its long, flowing branches look just like strong arms welcoming me in for a big hug. I LOVE it. So, I set out to draw this tree and this is what happened:

Treehouse

I wouldn’t call it photorealistic (ha!) but it was still fun. I need to invest in some nicer markers and paper now, then hopefully you’ll start to see some more drawings from me.

How to Be Even More Awesome

SupermanReady to start a new year? Afraid of failure? Not sure what to do next? Even if you’ve got it all together it’s still a good time to shake things up a bit. Here are several things you can do to reach a whole new level of awesome, which will ultimately inspire others to do the same.

Dream BIG
If you think your dreams are too big or impossible, dream even bigger. Stretch yourself to go further and reach higher than you’ve ever done before.  Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone.  If you allow God to work through you, you can definitely accomplish the impossible. He created you with gifts and talents to fulfill a mission. Trust Him.

Be Insanely Passionate
Being passionate keeps you motivated, but your zeal and enthusiasm is also inspiring to others. They may think you’re a little crazy for a while, but they’ll eventually watch your dreams come true. At that point you can stick your tongue out to all the haters and proclaim, “Who is crazy now?” It may very well still be you, but that’s okay.
